Who we are
The California Alliance for Road Safety (CARS) is a 501(c)(3) public-benefit traffic safety education and advocacy nonprofit working to reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and save lives across California.
We bring together traffic safety educators, public agencies, researchers, courts, community leaders, and safety advocates around a shared mission: strengthening education, advancing evidence-based solutions, and improving driver behavior to protect everyone on our roads.
Through public awareness campaigns, high-quality educational programming, and thoughtful advocacy, CARS works to shift driving culture in California — making safety the standard, not the exception.
Safer roads start with smarter drivers.
As legislative, technological, and roadway changes continue to reshape how we travel, CARS serves as a collaborative platform for innovation, quality improvement, and public-interest advocacy that strengthens traffic safety education statewide. While we work closely with traffic schools and driving educators, our purpose is public benefit — not industry representation.
We create space for traffic safety stakeholders to collaborate, elevate standards, expand community education, and support practical, prevention-focused policy solutions that reduce harm.
CARS is proud to be a member of the Road to Zero Coalition, a national coalition committed to eliminating roadway fatalities in the United States. This partnership reflects our commitment to bold, measurable action that moves California closer to zero traffic deaths.
Our goal is clear: to dramatically reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries in California — driving change, one mile at a time.

Stefanie Medlin, MSHe, CHES
Founder & CEO
Stefanie Medlin is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the California Alliance for Road Safety (CARS), Inc. and the National Alliance for Road Safety (NARS). She leads statewide and national efforts focused on evidence-based traffic safety education, injury prevention, and systems-level safety reform.
Stefanie holds a Master’s Degree in Health Education and is a Credentialed Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). Her professional foundation is in public health program development, safety intervention design, and cross-sector government collaboration. Throughout her career, she has worked at the intersection of education, compliance, and public policy — designing and managing prevention-focused initiatives that reduce risk and improve measurable safety outcomes.
Her experience spans large-scale public health and safety programs in partnership with federal, state, and local agencies, courts, nonprofit organizations, and private stakeholders. Stefanie specializes in translating policy goals into structured, implementable programs that prioritize accountability, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. Her work reflects a prevention-science approach: identifying risk factors, strengthening protective behaviors, and implementing interventions that change outcomes over time.
The missions of CARS and NARS are rooted in these same principles. Under Stefanie’s leadership, the organizations advance modern, evidence-informed traffic safety strategies, expand community-based education, and support prevention-centered policy solutions that reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
Stefanie believes meaningful road safety progress requires collaboration across disciplines — public health professionals, educators, courts, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders working together toward a common goal. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to public service, measurable impact, and the belief that safer roads are built through education, accountability, and sustained systems change.
“Road safety is not just about enforcement—it’s about education, accountability, and giving people the tools to make safer choices every time they get behind the wheel.”

Professional Career: Local 399 Transportation Coordinator
For the first decade of my career, I worked as a commercial driver, covering interstate routes in the motion picture industry. Those years on the road gave me a deep understanding of safe, efficient travel and the operational realities of long-haul transportation.
In the subsequent decade, I transitioned into the role of transportation coordinator, managing fleets and orchestrating complex logistics for large productions. I’ve overseen interstate and intrastate travel coordination for large vehicle fleets, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations while prioritizing safety at every step. With this dual perspective—from behind the wheel to leading operations—I bring a comprehensive commitment to road safety and operational excellence.

Professional Career: Local 399 Transportation Specialist
I’ve dedicated over two decades to the entertainment industry as a proud member of the Teamsters union local 399 for 22 years, where my role as a commercial driver has been the backbone of countless film and TV productions. From hauling equipment across bustling sets in Hollywood to navigating tight schedules on location shoots, I’ve witnessed the intricate dance of creativity and logistics that brings stories to life on screen. This hands-on experience has heightened my concerns for road safety, as I see firsthand the daily risks—distracted commuters, unpredictable weather, and overloaded rigs—that demand vigilant protocols to protect everyone on the highways. Through it all, I’ve gained a profound appreciation for the behind-the-scenes rhythm: the early-morning calls, the collaborative chaos of load-ins, and the satisfaction of ensuring seamless operations that keep the industry rolling forward.
