Changing Driving Culture. Saving Lives. Strengthening California. *

  • California doesn’t just need safer roads — it needs a safer driving culture. The California Alliance for Road Safety (CARS) is leading a statewide movement to change behavior, expand meaningful driver education, and prevent crashes before they happen. Because someone is waiting at home.

  • Every day on California roads, small decisions carry life-altering consequences. CARS is mobilizing educators, safety experts, and communities to expand meaningful driver education, launch public awareness campaigns, and advance smarter traffic safety policy. Safer drivers start with stronger education — and stronger education saves lives.

  • Education is the most powerful crash prevention tool we have. CARS is advancing public awareness campaigns, targeted diversion programs, and smarter traffic safety policy to build a culture of responsible driving across California. This is more than advocacy — it’s a movement for safer roads.

Welcome to the California Alliance for Road Safety (CARS), Inc.

We are a statewide public safety and traffic safety advocacy organization working to make California’s roads safer through education, awareness, and evidence-based reform.

CARS was founded on a simple but powerful belief:

Education saves lives.

Today, CARS operates as a 501(c)(3) public-benefit organization dedicated to advancing meaningful traffic safety education and developing solutions that reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and save lives across California.

We coordinate with traffic safety subject-matter experts, educators, community leaders, and public agencies to strengthen the reach, quality, and impact of roadway safety initiatives statewide.

CARS exists to advance effective, evidence-informed traffic safety education that protects drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and communities.

We serve as a collaborative platform where professionals and community leaders work together to:

  • Develop and expand targeted traffic diversion programs that increase meaningful driver education

  • Promote responsible, behavior-focused driving practices

  • Strengthen statewide public awareness campaigns

  • Support data-driven policy improvements

  • Reduce traffic injuries and fatalities across California

Our focus is not just on correcting mistakes — it is on preventing them through smarter education, earlier intervention, and a culture of shared responsibility on the road.

Our Purpose

What Makes CARS Different

CARS is not a trade association and does not exist to represent private business interests.

We are a public-benefit traffic safety organization focused on community impact.

That means:

  • We collaborate across sectors — educators, safety professionals, and community partners

  • We prioritize prevention over punishment

  • We develop educational interventions that address real driving behaviors

  • We connect frontline expertise with public safety policy

Traffic safety is not just about rules. It is about human behavior, decision-making, and lifelong learning.

California Drives Safe Movement-
A statewide public awareness campaign focused on shifting driving culture through storytelling, engagement, and accountability — because someone is waiting at home.

Targeted Traffic Diversion Programs-
CARS is developing behavior-focused educational programs such as SpeedSense and SafetySense to provide meaningful learning opportunities for high-risk and commercial drivers.

These programs aim to replace repeat violations with measurable behavioral change.

Brake Check Podcast-
Through community stories and expert insight, the Brake Check Podcast explores real-world driving decisions, close calls, and lessons that can change behavior behind the wheel.

California’s roads are among the busiest in the nation, and traffic crashes remain a leading cause of injury and loss of life.

Most drivers receive formal education only once — at the time of licensure — even though vehicles, laws, technology, and roadway risks are constantly evolving.

CARS is working toward policy changes that expand access to meaningful traffic safety education, support diversion-based learning opportunities, and strengthen public understanding of the rules of the road.

Because safer drivers mean safer roads.

And safer roads mean stronger communities.
